One of this area’s largest barns, and all its contents, was totally lost early Saturday morning in a fire set by lightning. The 40x70- foot structure was located on the farm, operated by Albert O. Matz Jr. at the Wm. Stauffer estate at the south edge of Marion.

On Aug. 29, Marion’s venerable barber, Al Holder, completed 64 years of continuous barbering in this community, and this is a state record. In addition, his business is the third oldest in the town, exceeded only by Case and Son insurance agency and the Marion County Record.

The Old Settlers Day booster trip will leave from Marion at 8 a.m. this coming Tuesday. Women are especially invited to take part in the trip and are urged to take cars.

Forty-seven fifth grade students took a field trip by bus to Hillsboro Tuesday morning to visit the traveling Cole Brothers circus. Accompanying the students were the teachers, Mrs. Pauline Edmunds and Mrs. Alice Sloup, along with mothers, Mrs. Lynn Christensen, Mrs. Gertrude Linn, Mrs. Gene Rector and Mrs. Daryl Merilatt.

Two Marion church congregations welcomed new ministers and their families in recent weeks. Rev. Jack Krause has accepted pastorate at Emmanuel Baptist church and Rev. James Bass has come to Marion Presbyterian church from Lawrence.
