The case of the State of Kansas vs. William E. Gayer, charged with the murder of Emporia loan company operator, Herbert J. Kindred, will go to trial at 9 a.m. Monday morning. Seventy witnesses have been subpoenaed for the trial that will consume at least two weeks, probably longer, in the opinion of experienced observers.

Seven Marion deer hunters, Leslie Powell, Floyd Padgett, Clive Jarvis, Al Williams, Wm. Ward, Jess Coons, and S.W. Gound, went to Colorado last week and after three days had their limit, one deer each.

In compliance with a request of the state draft board headquarters, the first peacetime draft call went out last week from the Marion County draft board. Five young men are to report Thursday for physical examination and subsequent induction into the armed forces for a 21-month training period.

Helen Hett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hett, is one of eight co-eds at Emporia State Teachers College named this week as candidates for the 1948 Homecoming Queen.

Kansas duck hunting season opened Friday noon and Lake Superintendent Jerry Mullikin reports that from 15 to 50 hunters are at the lake each morning.
