$4,000 in damage to get $5 in gum

A 14-year-old Hillsboro resident may face burglary and felony criminal damage charges after allegedly breaking the door of the Hillsboro Ampride early Sunday and stealing two packs of gum.
Surveillance footage showed the burglary occurred at 3:41 a.m., assistant chief Randal Brazil said.
The break-in was reported to police at 6:22 a.m.
The two packs of gum were worth about $5 total, Brazil said. Both were recovered.
Damage to the shattered door was about $4,000. That figure is preliminary because Cooperative Grain and Supply have not yet provided a repair estimate, Brazil said.
The youth was not arrested. The case is going to be submitted to the county attorney for review of burglary and felony criminal damage allegations.
The damage allegations stem from the estimated cost of the door, while the burglary stems from entering the place and taking property during commission of a felony.
