‘Best ever’ Old Settlers’ Day
Following the tradition of reporting each Old Settlers’ Day as being the “best ever,” I would like to say that Saturday’s event really was the best ever.
I didn’t grow up here, but the camaraderie and small-town spirit was keenly felt as current and former residents came together to celebrate their past.
I am fascinated with Marion’s history going back 156 years or so, and I was delighted to see many school classmates riding through the parade. They obviously cherish their hometown and have many good memories of the time they spent here.
It was intriguing to listen to them introduce themselves in the park and state where they are living. I wonder how they got where they are. Each one would probably make for an interesting interview.
In observing parents with their young children, laughing and participating in games, I could see a future full of promise.
For all the talk of a declining community, I was reminded that it’s the people who make a community what it is.
Saturday is Lincolnville’s Octoberfest, and members of the Centre community will be there. I am expecting to feel the same spirit there.
