‘Conscious discipline’ to be focus of free online classes

Staff writer

Families and Communities Together Inc. and It Takes a Village Early Childhood Collaborative will offer “conscious discipline” classes for parents of children from birth to 5 years.

Pre-registration for “Growing Family Connections” is required by Dec. 4.

The virtual classes, presented in four sessions, are free.

The first session, available on YouTube starting Jan. 16 and taught by Leslie Beery, will help parents deal with fussing and how to set limits.

The second, available starting Jan. 23 and also taught by Beery, will focus on encouragement and building self-esteem and willpower.

The third, available starting Jan. 30 and taught by Amy Stark, will cover empathy and positive intent.

The fourth, available starting Feb. 6 and also taught by Stark, will discuss consequences.

Question-and-answer sessions via Zoom will wrap up the classes at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 or Feb. 25. Parents will choose one meeting.

The classes are sponsored by Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund and Kansas Department for Health and Environment.

Registration is being accepted by email at sterka@usd411.org or by phone at (620) 947-1886.
