Dad out of bounds

Yelling at the umpire rose to a new level at a softball game last week for girls age 10 and younger.

“Apparently a parent from the Canton-Galva area was unhappy with the calls being made by the umpire,” police chief Tyler Mermis said.

The man was swearing and would not leave when asked.

Other parents called police, telling dispatchers they had the abusive fan cornered.

When officers arrived, they told the man to leave or he would be arrested for disorderly conduct. He left without further problems, Mermis said.

“We’ve got to remember the umpires are voluntary umpires, not professional umpires,” Mermis said. “They are still the officials.”
