A job well done

What a magnificent building! Those were the first thoughts that ran through my mind Saturday afternoon when I entered the Historic Elgin.

I had followed the progress of Jim Cloutier and his team of workers — from shell to showplace.

The décor and atmosphere is not like any other place in Marion County. Rich colors covered the walls, majestic marble floors were under foot throughout the building, beautiful wood trim framed each room and fireplace — all accomplished without losing historical amenities.

I was born in Marion, living here until I was 5 years old. Occasionally, very occasionally, my family would go to the Elgin to eat dinner. You know how childhood memories are, sometimes accurate, most times not.

I do remember a large wooden desk where hotel customers checked in. There also was a staircase behind the desk. If I was lucky, my family and I were seated in the restaurant where I would be able to see the television in the lobby — quite the attraction since we didn’t have one in our home. Those few occasions I remember of the Elgin were special.

Fast-forward 35 years when my father lived in an apartment in the same historic building. The apartment was comfortable enough but the building always seemed to be calling out — longing to be renovated to its original beauty.

Well, there should be no more longing.

Kudos also are due to members of mYac for their efforts. Even though the inaugural fund-raiser did not raise as many funds as desired, the concept is unique. We enjoyed seeing the pieces of local artists and photographers. What tremendous talent we have right here in our community and around the county.

We hope Jim can find a manager for his restaurant and cannot wait until it opens. It should be an attraction from far and near.
