Abducted missionary speaks at church

A missionary kidnapped and held hostage for 376 days by Muslim extremists in the Philippines spoke July 8 at Ladies Night at Marion Christian Church.

Gracia Burnham, who for 17 year had served with New Tribes Mission, was abducted by Abu Sayyaf terrorists from a resort on Honda Bay as she and her husband, jungle pilot Martin Burnham, celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary.

She was wounded and her husband and a third hostage, a Filipino nurse, were killed in a military raid that freed her.

Since then, she has written two books, “In the Presence of My Enemies” and “To Fly Again.”

The church’s Fellowship Hall was decorated for her presentation in a Philippine theme by Theodora Koslowsky, Mary Almaguer, Diane Sams, and Betty Sanders.

A dinner catered by Marissa Makovec was served to 74 members and guests.
