Aborted chase ends in arrest

Staff writer

Kansas Highway Patrol broke off a pursuit Friday night after a fleeing vehicle sped from McPherson County through Hillsboro.

The vehicle was later found nearby, and an 18-year-old accused of being the driver was arrested.

The pursuit began at 10:05 p.m. on US-56 about 12 miles east of McPherson, when a trooper attempted to stop the vehicle for speeding, trooper Tod Hileman said.

The vehicles continued eastbound on D St. from Adams St. in Hillsboro. Hileman said the pursuit ended for safety reasons.

Marion County authorities later located the vehicle near 190th and Jade Rds.

Hileman indicated that two suspects were taken into custody and three remained at large. KHP sent an aircraft to assist, but Hileman could not confirm details about the other suspects, some of whom might have been juveniles.

Jason Lee Martinez, 18, Richmond, Texas, was booked into Marion County jail at 3:12 a.m. Saturday on suspicion of fleeing police, reckless driving, speeding, driving without a valid license, transporting an open container, underage possession of alcohol, and failing to report suspension of his driver’s license.

He was released at 11:08 a.m. after posting a $2,000 bond.
