The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:
K-15 near Durham:
Jeremiah D. Sleeth, 34, Chapman, was southbound on K-15 near Durham in a 1979 GMC pickup at 2 p.m. April 3, when he noticed smoke coming from the camper he was pulling. He pulled the vehicles off the road, unhooked the camper, and pulled away. The camper received extensive fire damage to the front. The pickup was registered to Chris McGarvey, Chapman. Logan P. Roussel, 13, Chapman, was a passenger in the pickup. Marion County Sheriff Rob Craft reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.
300 block of South Roosevelt near Nickerson Street, Marion:
Edna M. Mason, 94, 302 S. Roosevelt, Marion, was driving a 1998 Lincoln Towncar at 3:07 p.m. April 3, when she backed from a drive onto Roosevelt Street, drove over a curb, and struck a house at the corner of South Roosevelt and Nickerson streets. She then drove across the street and struck the garage of her house. Marion Police Officer Clinton Jeffrey reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.
U.S.-77 at U.S.-56:
Elizabeth D. Spainhour, 19, McPherson, was eastbound on U.S.-56 in a 2003 Pontiac passenger car at 7:47 a.m. April 11, when she ran a stop sign at the intersection of U.S.-77/56/K-150 and hit the rear of a 1999 Ford Explorer, driven by Ramirez V. Mercado, 52, Pittsburg. Maria C. Carrillo, 47, Pittsburg, was a passenger in the Explorer. Amanda M. Catton, 18, was a passenger in the Pontiac. Catton was taken by Marion EMS to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. Marion County Sheriff Deputy Travis Wilson reported Spainhour also was taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion EMS.
500 block of South Cedar near Melvin Street, Marion:
Amy L. Vogel, 46, 515 S. Cedar, Marion, was backing eastbound from her private drive in a 2007 Kia Sport at 4:45 p.m. April 11, when her vehicle struck a legally parked 2004 Saturn Ion owned by Patrick L. Carr, 601 S. Fourth, Marion. Marion Police Sergeant Tyler Mermis reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.
U.S.-50 at Nighthawk Road:
Ruby B. Holy, 41, McPherson, was northbound on Nighthawk in a 2006 Nissan passenger car and stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of U.S.-50 and Nighthawk Road at 2 p.m. April 12. The driver did not see a 2002 Dodge pickup, driven by Robert McCurdy, 59, Goddard, and pulled in front of the vehicle, causing a collision. Barbara H. McCurdy, 61, Goddard, was a passenger in the pickup. Deputy Wilson reported Holy was taken by Peabody EMS to Newton Medical Center.
Main Street near First Street, Hillsboro:
George Smith, 66, Wichita, was backing from a parking space on Main Street near First Street, Hillsboro, in a 1995 Toyota pickup at 3:10 p.m. April 13, when his vehicle struck a parked car, a 1990 Buick passenger car, owned by Kimly Lee Carson of Independence. Hillsboro Assistant Police Chief Jessey Hiebert reported there were no injuries and less than $1,000 in damages.
60th Road near Timber Road:
Christopher S. Herda, 25, Newton, was westbound on 60th Road near Timber Road in a 1991 Ford Ranger pickup at 5 a.m. April 15, when a deer came from a north ditch. Herda swerved to miss the deer and rolled the vehicle into a north ditch. Amber Rayes, 19, and Nicholas S. Schmucker, 21, both of Newton, were passengers. Deputy Wilson reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.
K-256 near 190th Road:
Jeffrey E. Stenzel, 40, 2241 Pawnee, Marion, was southbound on K-256 near 190th Road in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup at 6:30 a.m. April 15, when a deer came from an east ditch and was struck. Marion County Undersheriff David Huntley reported the driver was not injured and more than $1,000 in damages.
120th Road near Alamo Road:
Angela T. Duerksen, 44, Newton, was eastbound on 120th Road near Alamo Road in a 1999 Ford van, registered to Gary Duerksen, Newton, at 9 p.m. April 16, when a deer came from a north ditch and was struck. Marion County Sheriff Deputy Larry Starkey reported the driver was not injured and there was more than $1,000 in damages.
Indigo Road near 120th Road:
Donna M. Thiessen, 53, 211 S. Adams Street, Hillsboro, was southbound on Indigo Road near 120th Road in a 1999 Dodge Caravan at 5 a.m. April 17, when a deer came from an east ditch and was struck. The vehicle was registered to Glen Thiessen, of the same address as the driver. Undersheriff Huntley reported the driver was not injured and more than $1,000 in damages.
