These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:

SHERIFF

K-15 south of 160th Rd.

Gerald E. Taylor, 58, Durham, hit a deer at 7 p.m. March 9 with his 2007 Nissan Quest. The van remained drivable despite damage to its front, left, and hood.

Nighthawk Rd. north of US-50

A 2001 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Richard A. Ferran Jr., 42, rural Peabody, sideswiped an approaching Versatile FE tractor owned and driven by Gordon A. Wiebe, 65, rural Whitewater, at 6:15 p.m. March 11.

Deputy Joshua Meliza reported that the tractor’s cultivator, which was struck by the left side of the pickup, extended two feet over the center line.

The pickup, owned by Patricia D. Ayers of Ferran’s rural Peabody address, sustained damage deemed moderate to its left side but remained drivable. Damage to the cultivator was termed minor.

Meliza blamed the accident on inattention by both drivers. No tickets were issued.

US-77 south of 140th Rd.

As reported in a news story last week, a 16-year-old passenger sustained disabling injuries and a 2008 Ford Escape was destroyed at 3:30 a.m. March 12 when the southbound car crossed a center line, traveled 255 feet through a ditch, overturned once, struck a tree while airborne, and came to rest on its top 110 feet from the east edge of the highway.

The passenger, Nolan M. Elrecus, was not wearing a seat belt when he was ejected from an unknown position in the vehicle, according to deputy Landis Goodman’s report.

The wreck was not reported to sheriff’s deputies. They discovered the vehicle 1¼ hours later, by which time Elrecus had been taken to a Wichita hospital by an unidentified motorist,

Driver Caleb A. Harris, 20, of the same Wichita address and who also was taken to Wichita, was ticketed by Goodman for allegedly having no license and leaving the scene of the accident.

Goodman’s report states that he could not determined whether Harris was wearing a seatbelt, injured, or ejected from the car.

Remains of the car, owned by Hailee E. Trichel of Corning, Iowa, were towed.

US-56 east of Timber Rd.

Scott A. Jewell, 53, Hutchinson, hit a deer at 7:57 p.m. March 12 with a 2022 Nissan Sentra owned by Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

The car sustained disabling damage to its front third, windshield, and undercarriage and was towed.

Stephanie D. Arnold, 48, of the same Hutchinson address was a passenger.

290th Rd. east of Wagon Wheel Rd.

Kaigen W. Brewer, 17, rural Lincolnville, lost control of a 2002 Toyota Tundra after hitting a bird at 10:30 a.m. March 13.

The pickup, owned by John W. Tajchman of rural Herington, ran off the road to the left and overturned, damaging the windshield, hood, and entire left side of the truck. It nonetheless remained drivable.

US-50 at Pawnee Rd.

Sneezing was blamed for a 2007 Nissan Altima scraping the side of a semi trailer while the semi was stopped, preparing to turn left, at 7:30 a.m. March 15.

Both vehicles were westbound. Nissan driver Laura A. Stevens, 63, Peabody, told deputy Kaylan Miles that she had begun to sneeze and only afterward had noticed that David P. Alcorn, 52, Marion, had stopped his Robinson Trucking semi in front of her.

She attempted to avoid the semi by driving into a ditch but was unsuccessful, according to Miles’s report. The report blamed the accident on her illness and inattention. No tickets were issued.

The car, owned by Jeannette C. Jacobson of Newton, sustained damage characterized as minor, as did the semi trailer.

HILLSBORO

Arbor Ct. west of Willow Glen Ln.

Paige C. Baize, 47, Hillsboro, backed a 2019 GMC truck owned by her employer, Tri-County Telephone of Council Grove, into a legally parked 2017 Ford Escape owned by Garrett T. Postier of Mulvane at 10:25 a.m. Thursday.

Officer Doug Dick’s report blamed the accident on improper backing, but no tickets were issued.

600 Western Heights Circle

Smoke began coming from the engine of a 2014 Freightliner semitrailer truck after driver Brady L. Brandenburg, 49, Salina, pulled the truck, owned by T&R Construction of Salina, into Epps Service at 9:47 a.m. Friday.

Brandenburg told police that the truck’s “check engine” light had come on while he was driving west on US-56 but that he did not smell smoke until after pulling in for fuel.

Hillsboro firefighters were called, but the engine fire had been put out with extinguishers before they arrived.

MARION

Roosevelt and Denver Sts.

A westbound three-wheel electric cycle carrying men ages 59 and 61 at 1:14 p.m. Sunday ran into the left front of a southbound sport-utility vehicle carrying a 40-year-old woman and 10-year-old child.

According to interim police chief Duane McCarty, a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe, owned and driven by Andrea R. Parmley, Marion, entered the intersection first and was to the right of the cycle, giving her right of way. However, no tickets were listed as being issued.

McCarty reported that the cycle was being driven by Kevin L. Kelsey, 59, and David R. Roberts, 61, of different Marion addresses. Ten-year-old Madalyn R. Parmley was a passenger in the SUV.

Ambulances were called but did not transport anyone to a hospital. No injuries were noted in McCarty’s report.
