These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:
SHERIFF
US-50 west of Alfalfa Rd.
Amaree R. Howard, 25, Madison, Wisconsin, hit a deer at 11:16 p.m. Oct. 30 with a 2019 Ford E-450 truck, according to one of 17 accident reports released Friday by the sheriff’s department.
The truck, owned by U-Haul of Phoenix, sustained damage characterized as minor to its left front headlight and bumper.
K-15 south of 120th Rd.
Joshua C. Weiser, 51, rural Goessel, hit a deer at 5:31 p.m. Oct. 31 with his 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. It sustained disabling damage to its front third and undercarriage and was towed.
Nighthawk Rd. south of 120th Rd.
Jerald D. Brown, 78, Hillsboro, hit a deer at 9:50 a.m. Nov. 2 with his 2012 Toyota Camry. It remained drivable with damage to its front, hood, and undercarriage.
US-50 east of Alfalfa Rd.
Betty M. Augustine, 82, Hesston, hit a deer at 11:23 a.m. Nov. 2 with her 2020 Ford F-150. It sustained disabling damage to its right front and was towed.
Steven L. Augustine, 74, of the same address, was a passenger.
290th Rd. west of Vista Rd.
Riley C. Janow, 20, rural Lincolnville, hit a deer at 7:11 p.m. Nov. 2 with a 2019 Ford Fusion owned by Wyatt Craney of the same address.
The pickup remained drivable with damage to its front and hood.
Mustang Rd. east of 50th Rd.
Gregory A. Leonhart, 48, Wichita, hit train tracks too fast at 4:02 p.m. Nov. 3 with his 2022 Kia Forte, causing disabling damage to its front and undercarriage. The car was towed.
Deputy Bruce Burke’s report blamed the wreck on driving inattentively and too fast for conditions. No tickets were listed as being issued.
K-256 west of Upland Rd.
Richard E. Smith, 55, Marion County Lake, hit a deer at 6:44 a.m. Nov. 4 with his 2014 Ford F-150. It remained drivable with damage to its right front and side.
US-56 west of Pawnee Rd.
Thomas A. Thomas, 46, Burns, was ticketed for crossing the centerline and not being licensed to drive a semi-trailer truck after his westbound 2003 International 9100 clipped at 9:13 a.m. Nov. 4 the mirrors of an eastbound 2019 Freightliner Cascadia.
Both semis sustained damage characterized as minor. They ran off the road to the right after colliding.
The Freightliner, owned by Success National Lease of Kansas City, Kansas, was driven by Stephen J. Prowse, 30, Wichita.
The International is owned by Thomasina R. Thomas, rural Burns.
Sunflower Rd. south of 180th Rd.
Tristen R. Cope, 33, rural Marion, hit a deer at 8:48 p.m. Nov. 4 with her 2014 Ford Escape. It sustained damage characterized as minor to its front and hood.
120th Rd. west of Goldenrod Rd.
Cody W. Jay, 17, rural Hillsboro, hit a deer at 10:11 p.m. Nov. 4 with a 2008 Ford F-250 owned by Michael W. Jay of the same address.
The pickup remained drivable with damage to its left front.
K-256 east of Eisenhower Dr.
Ashley N. Pfrenger, 35, Herington, hit one of three deer in the roadway at 12:04 a.m. Nov. 5.
Her 2002 GMC Yukon sustained disabling damage to its front and was towed.
Aiden J. Pfrenger, 10, of the same address was a passenger.
US-56/77 south of 350th Rd.
Estel R. Gross Sr., 73, Herington, was injured when airbags on his 2019 Chevrolet Trax deployed after he hit a deer at 6:05 a.m. Nov. 5.
Gross and passengers Virgina L. Cole, 42, and Matthew K. Mann, 17, of different Herington addresses were checked by ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.
The sport-utility vehicle sustained disabling damage to its entire front half and was towed.
140th Rd. east of Remington Rd.
Sheriff Jeff Soyez’s wife, Amy B. Soyez, 47, rural Marion, hit a deer at 7:37 a.m. Nov. 5 with a 2022 Chevrolet Traverse owned by Merck, Sharp and Dohme pharmaceuticals of Lenexa.
The sport-utility vehicle remained drivable with damage to its front third and undercarriage.
Children Amelia Soyez, 8, and Adeline Soyez, 5, of the same address were passengers.
US-50 east of Old Mill Rd.
Ryan C. Brand, 43, Colwich, hit a deer at 6:10 p.m. Nov. 5 with his 2025 GMC Sierra. It remained drivable with damage all along its left side.
Nighthawk Rd. east of 120th Rd.
Richard P. Ciero, 82, rural Marion, hit a deer at 6:16 p.m. Nov. 5 with a 1999 Buick LeSabre owned by Julia Ciero of Marion, Montana.
Damage to the front of the car was characterized as minor.
US-56 west of Old Mill Rd.
Dawn L. Jantz, 50, Hillsboro, hit a deer at 5:47 a.m. Thursday with her 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, which sustained disabling damage to its front third and undercarriage and was towed.
US-56/77 north of 360th Rd.
A 2013 Volkswagen Jetta that slowed suddenly to avoid an animal was sideswiped at 11:40 p.m. Thursday by a 2005 Ford Mustang that had been following the Jetta and whose driver attempted to avoid rear-ending it.
Both vehicles remained drivable.
The Mustang, owned and driven by James L. Commerford, 61, Herington, sustained damage along its left side.
The Jetta, owned by Shawn Stephens of Cedar Hill, Texas, and driven by Elijah Z, Lewis, 19, of the same address, sustained damage to the rear portion of its right side.
Javonte D. Harris, 19, North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Noor Albohsan, 21, and Raegen A. Brown, 18, of different addresses in Kansas City, Missouri, were passengers in the Jetta.
Deputy Joshua Meliza’s report blamed the wreck on Lewis following too closely, but no tickets were listed as being issued.
HILLSBORO
Senior center parking lot
Leaving a parking space at 12:47 p.m. Nov. 5, Nancy L. Caudell, 84, Hillsboro, backed a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado into a 2014 Ford Explorer parked next to a driveway entrance.
The Silverado, owned by Devin D. Kelsey, Salina, sustained damage to its left rear bumper. The right front corner of the Explorer was damaged
US-56 west of K-15 / Holly Rd.
Driving a school sport-utility vehicle back from a football game in Hoisington, USD 410 activities director Robert D. Rempel, 56, Hillsboro, hit a deer at 10:45 p.m. Friday.
Rempel’s 2025 Ford Explore remained drivable with damage to its right front and side bumpers, headlight, and passenger door.
