Assisted living expands services to include activity director

Managing editor

Exercise is important at any age but as a person ages, exercising the mind, body, and spirit becomes even more essential.

Marion Assisted Living now has a full-time activity director to keep residents motivated and active.

Bonnie Brock of Marion has a well-rounded background in the retirement setting. Having worked in the health care field for 20 years, Brock’s experience includes elderly transportation and dietary needs, as well as training as a certified nursing assistant and certified medical assistant in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

“I really enjoy the residents,” she said. “I like helping them, making their lives more pleasant.”

Brock has been an employee at Marion Assisted Living for a year; she was appointed activity director Jan. 1.

She has received training to be the director with additional education available.

Exercising and playing games are part of the daily routine at the living center. Outings are planned when the weather is warmer.

“It’s important for people to remain active,” Brock said. “It keeps joints limber and their minds sharp. It also helps with depression.”

Since Brock is a CMA, she is able to dispense medications on field trips and assist with residents as needed.

Not only is she helping the residents learn ways to keep active and vibrant, Brock appreciates the interaction she has with them.

“I’ve learned a lot from the residents,” she said.
