Audio book tour planned

A six-stop audio book tour of portions of Marion County is in the works for Flint Hills Counterpoint.

Counterpoint will sponsor the audio book tour Sept. 7. It will be led by Rex Buchanan, director emeritus of Kansas Geological Survey.

Leaving at 9:45 a.m. from Peabody City Park, the bus tour will include stops at Crystal Springs in Florence, St. John Nepomucene Church in Pilsen, Marion City Park, Max Terman’s Berm House in Hillsboro, Mennonite Heritage and Agriculture Museum in Goessel, and downtown Peabody.

The tour is the first preview of a larger project in the works.

“We conducted over 40 interviews and have had over 11 community events about specific areas and topics about Marion County,” Counterpoint executive director Susan Mayo said. “This is just a launch of the project to give folks a taste of what the final product will be.”

Mayo said the tour would feature talks about each stop. Music about each site will be performed live by Switchgrass String Quartet.

Lunch will be covered in the $30 ticket price and will be served at Marion City Park by That One Place.

Counterpoint has been working on the project for two years, gathering interviews, film, and photos and writing original music. The audio book is being produced by filmmaker Diane Meeks, who recorded interviews for the project.

The participants will get a “Launch” photocopy version of the book covering the areas the tour will visit, Mayo said.

“This has turned out to be an enormous and rewarding, continually evolving project,” she said.
