Baseball players aim for state

Staff writer

Hillsboro and Marion senior Babe Ruth baseball players will compete in a pair of double-elimination tournaments Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for spots in a state tournament.

Marion will present two district tournaments because some districts didn’t have any senior Babe Ruth teams, organizer Casey Case said.

Marion and Hillsboro are in separate brackets, meaning they will not play each other. State tournament play begins July 24 in Independence.

Marion’s bracket includes Salina Indians and Herington. Marion will play Herington at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Hillsboro’s bracket includes Salina Aces and Buhler. Hillsboro will play Salina Aces at 6 p.m. Friday. Hillsboro finished the regular season with a 13-6 record.

Hillsboro’s bracket should be competitive because the teams are evenly matched, Lyman Adams said. He handles behind-the-scenes work for Hillsboro.

“We had a very young team at the start but finished with a good record,” he said.

Volunteers are needed for many tasks at the tournament, Case said. Scoreboard operators, concessions workers, announcers, and gate workers are sought. Anyone wishing to volunteer should call Margo Yates at (620) 382-3425.
