Basement fire destroys rural home
Staff writer
A basement fire March 1 at the Mark Collett residence at 2863 K-150 grew into a structure fire that damaged much of the house.
Marion Fire Chief Mike Regnier estimated the damage would cost $60,000 to $70,000 to repair. The appraised value of the 18-year-old house before the fire was $76,550.
When Marion firefighters arrived at the residence at 7 p.m., fire was visible from the road. Firefighters quickly worked to knock down the fire but stayed on the scene until 11 p.m. to make sure it did not re-ignite.
The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
Collett told Regnier that he plans to rebuild the house with the help of insurance funds.
