Hillsboro boys closed last week by securing a 50-49, two-overtime victory Thursday over Lyons, and winning 37-35 Friday over Inman.
The Trojans’ offense in each game ran through Brekyn and Grayson Ratzlaff. They were Hillsboro’s only players to clear 10 points Thursday and were two of three Trojans to score double-digits Friday.
Hillsboro struggled in the second quarter Friday and scored just three points but found success in the second half with 14 points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth.
Matthew Potucek was integral to the victory, dropping 12 of his 14 points in the second half.
It was a similar story Thursday, where the Trojans again tallied just three points the second quarter but added 13 points the third quarter and 14 in the fourth.
Peabody now 2-0
Peabody-Burns coach Bob Kyle said before the season that opening this season at a tournament would help his team to a fast start, and that has proven to be the case so far.
While Peabody-Burns didn’t start until nearly a week after many teams, the Warriors opened by winning their first two games.
Friday’s performance, a 58-36 victory over Altoona-Midway, helped the Warriors go undefeated in its first appearance at the Marais des Cygnes Valley tournament.
Peabody-Burns stifled Altoona-Midway, allowing just one player to reach double figures, despite having seven players score at least a point.
Classic canceled
The Marion Classic was canceled Friday for the first time in the tournament’s 13-year history, so Marion boys last played Dec. 8 in a 66-26 loss to Berean Academy, which happened in the Warriors’ first game of the tournament.
Despite starting 0-2, Marion can hang its hat on the work of Braedon Mercer, whose 15-point performance in the tournament’s 3-point contest led all athletes.
The competition’s final round was scheduled to take place Saturday.
Goessel places 4th
Goessel boys placed fourth in the Bluebird Classic with a dominant 62-22 victory Friday against Burrton and a 41-38 loss Saturday to Central Christian.
The Bluebirds intercepted several passes against Burrton to lead 15-0 less than four minutes into the game and led 50-12 at the half. Skyler Wuest unloaded 19 points, and 10 different Bluebirds scored in the lopsided victory.
The Bluebirds grabbed an 11-1 lead Saturday against Central Christian, but the Cougars jumped ahead to open the second quarter. The Cougars led by as many as five points, but the game was tied 29-29 after three quarters.
Luke Wiens, Caiden Duerksen, Jacob Schrag and Wuest all scored in the fourth quarter, but Central Christian hit a late 3-pointer with the game tied to win.
Wuest scored 11 points and Nate Zogleman added 10.
The Bluebirds play Friday at Udall, and they won 45-29 Tuesday at Rural Vista.
