Leave it to Marion’s Chingawassa Days committee to score big with its musical headliners for this year’s festival, and bring me down at the same time.
Being more attuned to jazz or rhythm and blues, I don’t really know that much about country music.
However, I know country well enough that when I saw the name Phil Vassar as Saturday’s headliner this year, I gave the committee two big thumbs up.
Ah, but when I went through the list of some of the songs he’s written, there was one that surprised me. “Bye, Bye,” sung by Jo Dee Messina. Vassar has written lots of hit country tunes, but I didn’t know that was his.
If you know the song, it’s a ramped up, kicking-good “see ya later” song about a relationship gone sour.
I knew that one too, too well. And that’s when I went from a country high to singin’ the blues.
Don’t worry, I’ll get over it soon enough. The musical news is too good to mope over lost love for long.
So folks, it’s time for you to get ready to button up for some country that will have something most everyone will love. Button up as in get ready to buy your Chinga buttons — the party’s a comin’ soon!
