Lows fall 1 degree short of records

Although 2023-’24 has witnessed record-breaking extremes, Marion came just 1 degree short of setting a record for cold this week.

The National Weather Service’s official climatological recording station at Marion Reservoir recorded the weekend’s coldest temperature as 7 below at 6 a.m. Sunday.

The date record for Jan. 14 remains 1 degree colder at 8 below, set in 1979.

Records for Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday likewise weren’t impaired. Saturday’s record remains at 13 below, set in 1979. Monday’s is the same as Sunday’s, 8 below, set in 1979. Tuesday’s is 9 below, set in 1984.

As we did on Sunday, we missed Tuesday’s record by a single degree. The official coldest reading for the week occurred at 7 a.m. Tuesday, when the temperature at the reservoir sank to 8 below.

The coldest ever recorded at Marion Reservoir was 16 below on Jan. 31, 1979. The coldest on any date was 24 below on Dec. 23 and 24, 1989.

The record we did manage to surpass this season came with our 12-inch snowfall Nov. 26.

That was the most snow that had fallen in any single day at Marion Reservoir since records began being kept there in 1966.
