CENTRE BASKETBALL: Girls

Centre High School girls’ basketball team, with a record of 8-11, is seeded third in the 1A regional tournament. The team played sixth-seeded Marais des Cygnes (3-16) Monday at Centre and won the game, 46-27.

The game developed slowly as both sides had trouble finding the basket. Centre led by three points, 13-10, at halftime.

The Lady Cougars picked up their play in the second half. They led by seven points at the end of the third quarter, and surged farther ahead in the fourth, to win by 19 points.

Leann Pankratz, the only senior on the team, led Centre’s scoring with 20 points. Carlye Simons scored 10 points, Shelby Deines five, Josie Peterson four, D.J. Turner three, and Allison Shields and Ripley Howard two each.

The Lady Cougars will play second-seeded Waverly (11-8) Thursday at Madison.

Centre vs. Chase County

The Lady Cougars played Chase County Friday at home in the last game of the regular season. They were defeated, 48-37.

The girls couldn’t seem to get going in the first quarter. They had a lot of bad passes resulting in turnovers. They trailed by five, 11-6, at the end of the quarter.

Midway into the second quarter, after trailing by as much as 13 points, Centre staged a minor comeback, getting to within seven, 25-18, at halftime.

The gap was narrowed to five points in the third quarter, but Chase County quickly surged to a 13-point lead.

Shields, Howard, Pankratz, Simons, Deines, and Sammi Seifert all scored points in the fourth quarter but were unable to overcome the deficit, losing by 11 points.

Simons led Centre’s scoring with 14 points. Shields, Deines, and Howard scored six points each. Turner and Pankratz had two points each and Seifert one.

The junior varsity was defeated, 43-30. Josie Peterson scored a team-high 10 points, followed by Theo Kassebaum with eight, and Tori Marler and Howard with four each.
