Centre beats Burrton for 1st win of football season

Friday was a momentous night for the Centre Cougars. They defeated Burrton on the road 72-33 for their first victory of the season. It also was their first district game.

Centre outscored Burrton 14-7 in the first quarter on two 1-yard touchdown runs by Cole Methvin and a two-point conversion by Dylan Deines on a pass from Max Svoboda.

After Burrton tied the game early in the second quarter, Centre scored the next two touchdowns on a 21-yard run by Svoboda and a 17-yard run by Barrett Smith. Deines ran for two extra points, and Centre led 28-14 at halftime.

The second half only got better for the Cougars. Svoboda scored two touchdowns on 5-yard and 35-yard runs, and Smith had a 3-yard touchdown. Conversions were completed by Methvin and Deines.

In the final quarter, Smith scored first on a 15-yard run. Tanner Peterson scored the final two touchdowns of the game, one on a 15-yard run, and one on a 1-yard run.

In all, Centre scored 10 touchdowns on the night and walked away with a 39-point victory.

Centre had 404 yards rushing, compared with 210 yards by Burrton. The Cougars had a hard time in the air. Methvin threw 9 passes with only one completion for 11 yards by Deines.

Smith was Centre’s leading rusher, with 21 carries for 172 yards, followed by Svoboda with 19 carries for 138 yards. Xavier Espinoza had one interception. Naerebout led tacklers with 13, followed by Methvin with 9.
