Staff writer

The Centre Cougars came from behind in the first game of a Herington tournament last week to defeat Herington, 45-31.

Centre trailed 11-6 after one quarter but went ahead early in the second to take a 23-17 lead at halftime. C.J. Thompson, Nathaniel Engler, Cole Srajer, Max Svoboda, Cole Methvin, and Dylan Deines all contributed points.

The Cougars continued to build their lead in the second half and won by 14 points.

Coach Richard Idleman, a native of Herington, said he was nervous before the game. He was happy for the victory.

“We accomplished my goal to beat Herington,” he said.

Srajer led scoring with 14 points, followed by Deines, 8, and Engler and Methvin, 6 each.

Southeast of Saline

The Cougars faced a formidable state-ranked foe Friday in Southeast of Saline. They trailed by 8 points after one quarter and were left in the dust the rest of the game. Centre lost 53-24.

Madison

The contest Saturday with Madison proved to be a close one. Centre lost 44-42.

The Cougars led by 4 points after one quarter, and the game was tied 28-28 at halftime.

The third quarter saw little scoring by either team. Methvin contributed 5 points, and Cody Svoboda had a free throw. Centre trailed by 2 points at the end of the quarter.

Svoboda tied the game early in the fourth before Madison took a 5-point lead. Deines made a basket and Srajer scored on a steal to close the gap to 3. After a Madison free throw, Srajer made two free throws, but time ran out, and the Cougars walked away with a 2-point loss.

Srajer compiled 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Svoboda also scored in double digits with 11 points.

Srajer was named to the all-tournament team.
