Centre boys lose to Wakefield
After two victories over Wakefield earlier in the season, the Centre Cougars lost to the Bombers Friday on the road, 52-51.
Centre shot 43 percent from beyond the arc but only 32 percent from two-point range.
Ty Simons led the Cougar offense. He made all five of his three-point attempts, six-of-10 field goals, and one-of-five free throws for a total of 28 points.
Centre led by three, 16-13, after one quarter. Simons made all nine of Centre’s points in the second quarter, but Wakefield made 17 to take a 30-25 halftime lead.
Grant Srajer made a trey and Simons, Deines, and Kyle Methvin made field goals in the third quarter but that was not enough to overtake Wakefield, which had a six-point edge heading into the fourth quarter.
The Cougars outscored Wakefield 16-11 in the final quarter. However, Simons missed two free throws and Deines missed one while the Bombers combined for seven to win by one point.
James Wyatt led on the boards with five rebounds. Deines and Brunzell had four each. Deines provided three assists. Methvin took two charges and Srajer had one.
The Cougars play Friday at Goessel.
A non-league home game Jan. 22 against Flint Hills Christian of Manhattan proved to be an easy 94-26 victory.
Eleven members of the team made points. Deines led scoring with 18 points, followed by Methvin, 14; Srajer, 11; and Kodey Johnson and Wyatt, 10 each.
Other scorers were Houston Svoboda, nine; Simons, seven; Dakota Stimpson, five; Tanner Peterson and Brunzell, four each; and Chad Mueller, two.
