CENTRE: Centre girls are 1-1 in preseason pool play

The Centre High School girls’ basketball team lost one and won one in pool play last weekend at the Herington preseason tournament.

They were defeated Friday by Northern Heights, 51-40, and defeated Herington Saturday, 46-33. They will play Hope at 6:45 p.m. Thursday in the middle school gym for third place.

In the game against Herington, the Lady Cougars took a 15-7 first-quarter lead and led by 11 points, 26-15, at halftime.

The Lady Railers outscored Centre 10-5 in the third quarter, narrowing the lead to six points, but a seven-point scoring advantage for Centre in the fourth quarter resulted in a 13-point victory for the Lady Cougars.

Shelby Deines had a big night, outscoring her team members by a large margin. She scored 25 points, including four 3-point goals, two 2-point goals, and 7-of-14 free throws.

Deines also led Centre’s scoring in the game against Northern Heights. She scored 14 points, including two 2-point goals, two 3-point goals, and 4-of-5 free throws.

The junior varsity lost to Northern Heights, 28-16, and Herington, 46-35. Anna Weber scored in double digits against Herington, with 12 points.
