Centre volleyball off to slow start

Staff writer

Because of COVID concerns, Centre’s first two volleyball games of the season were cancelled.

Centre is scheduled to host an invitational tournament Saturday.

“I told my players to stay flexible and positive and be thankful for the games we can play,” first-year coach Shelby Srajer said. “We don’t have control over the situation.”

Ten of the 14 members on the roster are returning. Carly Deines, Lexis Brewer, and Kenide Steiner are returning starters and letter winners, and Alex Remmers also is a letter winner.

Brewer, a senior, will be a setter, and Carly Deines, a senior, will be a hitter and defender. Big middle blocks are expected from sophomore Kenide Steiner and freshman Olivia Carlson. Sophomore Sarah David and Remmers will be hitters.

Srajer expects her team to be scrappy on offense and defense.

“Although the starting six have never played a season together, they’ve meshed quickly and are ready for competition,” she said. “These girls work hard and work very, very well together, so I’m excited to see them show it during the season.”

Other members who are expected to see varsity play are sophomores Allie Stuchlik, Jenaya Plett, Addison Makovec, and Payton Svitak.

The team is working on becoming consistent hitters while being aggressive.

“It is something we have worked on in practice and will continue to improve on,” Srajer said.

Srajer is a Centre High School graduate and is in her first year of teaching and coaching. She is assisted by Taylor Kraus.

“It’s a great feeling to be back at Centre,” Srajer said. “I’m excited to be here and to contribute in a way I haven’t done before.”
