CENTRE: CJHS A-teams lose to Herington

B-team brings home lone victory

Centre Junior High School basketball teams traveled Monday to Herington to play against Herington Middle School.

The boys’ B-team was the only team to return home victorious. It defeated Herington, 37-21. Centre led 18-10 at halftime and added 17 points in the second half compared to 11 by Herington.

At least 10 Cougars scored, led by Kodey Johnson, with eight, and Kyle Methvin, six. Houston Svoboda, Cory Brunzell, Chad Mueller, and Jerami Slayden added four points each. Other scorers were Ty Simons, Grant Srajer, and Karl Riffel, two points each, and Tanner Peterson, one.

The boys’ A-team was defeated, 30-24. Centre trailed 14-8 at halftime, and both teams scored 16 points in the second half, resulting in a six-point loss for the Cougars.

Centre’s high-point men were Justin Deines, 10, and Dylan Svitak, eight. Kendall Harding, James Wyatt, and Methvin added two points each.

The girls’ A-team was defeated, 33-20. It had a 5-2 lead after one quarter, but was out-scored the remainder of the game. A 12-3 scoring advantage for Herington in the final quarter figured prominently in the 13-point loss.

Casey Simons scored most of Centre’s points, compiling 12 with five field goals and two free throws. Anna Weber added four points, and Bryanna Svoboda and Ellie Miller two each.

The girls’ B-team was defeated, 11-10. Scorers were Amy Makovec, four, and Rebekah Basore, Makenzie Deines, and Genesis Rudolph, two each.
