Centre Cougars trounce Herington, 62-6

Centre’s Jensen Riffel powered through Herington’s defense at Bud Peterson Field on Friday for numerous long runs, including five touchdowns. Two were punt returns.

The Railers had a hard time running the ball and trailed 56-0 before scoring their only touchdown near the end of the second quarter. The game ended at halftime with Centre winning 62-6.

Braxton Smith, Aidan Svoboda, and Lane Methvin also scored touchdowns. All but one conversion attempt were successful, including runs by Smith, Riffel, and Jacob Hird and pass receptions by Luke Hudson, Kyle Peterson, Methvin, Riffel, and Smith.

Centre had 15 carries for 274 yards compared with Herington’s 28 carries and 96 yards.

Centre lost 25 yards on 3 penalties; Herington lost 43 yards on 6 penalties.

League play will end Friday, when Centre will play state-ranked Canton Galva on the road.
