It has been a while since the Centre High School Cougars scored a touchdown against any opponent, so the 60-14 loss against Hope had a silver lining.
After going scoreless for most of the first half, the Cougars’ Zach Antoszyk caught a 45-yard pass in the end zone at 2:32 in the second quarter for six points. Brian Burhoop caught a pass from Rustyn Kerbs for the two-point conversion.
After another touchdown by the Lions, Hope led 50-8.
Quarterback Ben Krause ran nine yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. The conversion attempt failed.
Hope scored another 14 points in the third quarter, the last touchdown coming at 4:31. Due to the 45-point rule, the Lions’ 50-point lead brought the game to an end.
The Cougars compiled three first downs compared to 12 by Hope. They had trouble on the ground, gaining just 28 yards in 16 carries compared to 208 yards on 35 carries by Hope.
They were more competitive in the air with 10 receptions for 118 yards. Hope had 10 receptions for 136 yards.
Brandon Albrecht was Centre’s leading rusher with six carries for 16 yards. Krause threw nine passes for 112 yards and Burhoop caught the ball three times for 36 yards.
Tanner Brunner led the defense with 10 solo tackles and six assists. Antoszyk had seven solo tackles and eight assists.
The Cougars play at home Friday against Wakefield.
