The Centre Lady Cougars are not used to losing, but they faced a strong 2A school Friday at home. They were defeated in their homecoming game by Chase County 58-38.
The first half against Chase County was competitive, but a bad third quarter put the game out of reach for Centre. Trailing by 6 points at halftime, the team’s shooting turned cold.
“We did not shoot well and Chase County controlled the boards at our end and pushed the ball down the court,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “We failed to play good transition defense, giving up a bunch of easy baskets as Chase County would make an extra pass to find the open person.”
After outscoring Centre 24-6, Chase County led 50-26 at the end of the quarter.
The girls outscored Chase County 12-8 in the final quarter but finished with a 20-point loss.
Two Chase County players combined for nine 3-point baskets.
Shelby Makovec led Centre’s scoring with 12 points, 9 from beyond the arc, but she missed numerous 2-point shots. She had 4 assists.
Lotti Benning was strong at the boards with 12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. She also provided 3 assists and 4 points.
Ally Basore had 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Shelby Pankratz was unable to score from 3-point range, but she scored 9 points and had 2 assists and 2 steals.
Other scorers were Callie Riffel and Summer Espinoza, 4 points each; Nellie Kassebaum and Ally Basore, 2 points each; and Brenna Shields, 1.
After beating Peabody-Burns on Tuesday, Centre’s overall season record is 16-3.
