Centre girls' track team takes 2nd at Fairfield

The Centre track team competed against Fairfield, Inman, Little River, and Peabody-Burns on April 21 at Fairfield.

Nellie Kassebaum and Brenna Shields led the girls’ team to a second-place finish. Kassebaum won the 3,200 meters, and Shields won the 100 and javelin.

Shields finished second in long jump, along with Kailyn Riffel in shot put and javelin, Alexa Ammann in discus, and Amanda Salamone in high jump.

Third-place finishers were Cassidy Hill in discus, Callie Riffel in the 800, and Summer Espinoza in shot put.

Placing fourth were Lotti Benning in the 800, Whitney Gutsch in discus, and Kate Basore in javelin.

Barrett Smith led individual boys with a second-place finish in javelin. The boys 4x100 relay team of Max Svoboda, Brendon Bina, Cody Svoboda, and Conner Montgomery also finished second.

Montgomery placed third in the 200 and Cody Svoboda placed fourth in javelin.

The boys’ team finished in fifth place.

In their first run of the season Thursday at Council Grove, the girls’ 4x800 relay team of Benning, Kassebaum, Callie Riffel, and Makovec finished in 11 minutes, 8.4 seconds, breaking the old school record, set in 2000, by 30 seconds. They placed fourth.

Top placers were Smith, second in boys’ javelin, and Shields, third in girls’ javelin.
