Gymnasium gets a face-lift

Staff writer

The original 1958 Centre High School gymnasium is undergoing major renovation this summer.

Anyone entering the gym during daylight hours is sure to notice how much brighter it is even without lights.

That is mostly because windows have been installed along the south side. The original windows were replaced with opaque panels many years ago to conserve energy. The new energy-efficient windows allow the gymnasium to be flooded with natural light.

A white ceiling and white sidewalls add to the brighter atmosphere. Standing in sharp contrast to these are ceiling beams that have been painted royal blue.

The gymnasium floor will be refinished and will include a painting of the new Cougar logo at the center of the floor. The logo was approved Friday in a special meeting of the board of education.

The board also approved new royal-blue wall pads for the east end of the court.

In addition to creating greater eye appeal, Superintendent Jerri Kemble said, the renovation will provide energy savings. The gym lights, which also emanate heat, will not be on for most of the day.
