CENTRE: junior varsity

The Centre junior varsity Cougars defeated Canton-Galva Sept. 15 at home, 32-8.

Despite committing seven penalties for a loss of 50 yards, the Cougars zipped the Eagles 32-0 in the first three quarters of the game before Canon-Galva scored their only eight points in the fourth.

Rustyn Kerbs ran into the end zone from the one-yard line to score the first touchdown. Tanner Brunner ran 14 yards for the second, putting Centre up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougars added two more touchdowns in the second quarter, one on a 49-yard run by Kerbs and the other on a 48-yard pass from Brian Burhoop to Brunner.

The ball was intercepted in the third quarter, and Kerbs carried it 50 yards for the Cougars’ final touchdown.

No conversion attempts were successful.

Centre rushed for 111 yards on 20 carries compared to 44 yards on 45 carries by Canton-Galva.

Brunner was leading rusher with six carries for 59 yards, followed by Kerbs with five carries for 57 yards. Other rushers were Alex Hajek 3-9, Nathan Barney 4-21, and Kordell Harding, 2-3.

Brunner threw two completed passes for 52 yards. Burhoop had a 48-yard reception and Kerbs received for four.

Alex Hajek led the defense with five solo and 10 assisted tackles. Barney had three solo tackles and two assists.

Other tacklers were Shane Methvin 0-8 and one interception, Benjamin Wirtz 0-10, Kerbs 1-6 and one interception, Quentin Wacker 1-4, Barney 3-2, Harding 1-11, Brunner 1-6, Casey Kristek 0-4, and Burhoop 1-3.

The team played Hope Monday at home. They were defeated, 38-22.

Touchdowns were scored by Methvin, Cahn Antoszyk, and Kristek. Kristek and Savik Howard completed two-point conversions.

Antoszyk was leading rusher, carrying the ball three times for 49 yards. Brunner threw seven completed passes for 107 yards, and Kristek received four passes for 62 yards.

Nathan Barney led the defense with seven solo tackles and 10 assists. He also recovered a fumble.
