Centre ladies blow out St. Xavier

Staff writer

The Centre High School girls’ basketball game Friday at home against non-league opponent St. Xavier provided an easy victory. The girls swamped them 58-12. Xavier had just six players on its roster.

Centre starters were Shelby Makovec, Cacey Simons, Bryanna Svoboda, Beka Basore, and Ellie Miller.

The girls got numerous fast breaks for layups but preferred shooting from the perimeter. They were quite successful, leading 25-2 at the end of the first quarter and 36-6 at halftime.

The second half was a repeat of the first half as the Lady Cougars went on to win by 46 points.

The team made 25 of 62 shots, including four of 11 from the 3-point line. They made 50 percent of their free throws.

Simons led scoring with 16 points, followed by Shelby Makovec with 13. Basore was the leading rebounder with nine. Amy Makovec contributed five assists, and Deines and Simons had four steals each.

Coach Alan Stahlecker was pleased with how the girls passed the ball to find open players.

“We turned the ball over on too many occasions against this team,” he said. “We will need to improve in ‘valuing the basketball’ if we are to be successful this week.”
