Lady Cougars lose to Wakefield
The Centre High School girls basketball team held their own for three quarters Friday in the homecoming game against Wakefield but lost it in the end with a disappointing fourth quarter. They were defeated, 41-33.
The Lady Cougars led, 8-7, after the first quarter. The Lady Bombers went on a 7-point shooting spree in the second quarter to gain a 14-9 lead. A field goal by Cacey Simons, free throws by Theo Kassebaum and Anna Weber, and a 3-point bucket by Bryanna Svoboda put Centre back in the lead, 16-14.
However, a last-second long 3-pointer by Wakefield gave the Lady Bombers a 1-point lead, 17-16, at halftime.
Allison Shields and Simons combined for 9 points in the third quarter, compared to 7 by Wakefield, to give Centre a 25-24 lead.
Wakefield started the fourth quarter with 6 unanswered points, and Centre trailed, 30-25. After Svoboda was knocked out of the game due to an injury, the Lady Cougars struggled to maintain momentum.
The Lady Bombers led by as much as 8 points in the quarter. Weber sank a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go to narrow the gap to 4 points, 37-33, but the game ended with a 9-point loss for the Lady Cougars.
Wakefield had one player who scored 17 points. Simons led Centre’s scoring with 10 points. Shields scored 8 points, Weber 6, Svoboda 5, and Theo Kassebaum and Ellie Miller 1 each.
Junior varsity
The junior varsity defeated Wakefield, 34-20. They trailed 14-13 at halftime but outscored Wakefield 21-6 in the second half.
Scorers were Amy Makovec 9 points, Kassebaum 7, Cassandra Dones and Beka Basore 3 each, and Brianna Alvarez, Carrie Carlson, and Yvonne Calvert 2 each.
Elyria
In a makeup game Monday at Elyria Christian, the girls varsity was defeated by 1 point, 44-43.
Elyria maintained a 3-point lead in the first three quarters of play. However, Centre led, 43-40, with less than a minute to go. An Elyria 3-pointer tied the game.
Centre had a good look at the basket but missed a shot with 15 seconds remaining. A foul on the other end as time ran out and an ensuing free throw gave Elyria the victory.
“I was pleased with our offensive effort in this game,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “We were able to get lots of good shots. Our free-throw efforts really hurt us as we only made 1out of 8 (12.5 percent).
Stahlecker said freshman Amy Makovec stepped into the point guard spot for injured freshman Bryanna Svoboda and did an “admirable” job.
Shields and Simons scored 13 points each.
The junior varsity was defeated, 18-8, in a two-quarter game. Scorers were Rudolph 4 and Dones and Basore 2 each.
