Centre preschool through 5th grade now remote

In-person classes to resume after winter break

Staff writer

Because a staff member at Centre school tested positive for COVID-19 and several students and staff are direct contacts, preschool through 5th grade classes were switched to online only through the Dec. 18 start of winter break.

The board of education made the decision in a special meeting Wednesday, canceling in-person classes Thursday and Friday and beginning remote classes Monday.

“Students in grades 6-12 will continue to remote into their classes as scheduled,” superintendent Susan Beeson said.

Beeson said students at all grade levels were tentatively scheduled to return to the classroom after winter break Jan. 4.

“This is extremely disappointing and bad for us,” Beeson said. “It’s very sad for the parents.”

Beeson said it’s important to provide safety for students and make decisions that help working parents maintain employment.

The school has between 85 and 90 preschool through 5th grade students, she said.

A meal program will continue to provide food for students, delivering the meals directly to families or to community locations, she said.

“We’re appreciative of our families and our school board members in the times that tough decisions have to be made for the safety of all,” Beeson said. “This is a terrible burden on people having to make these decisions.”

An annual poinsettia sale, originally scheduled for Saturday, will be postponed.
