Centre students receive awards

Centre High School students received numerous academic and athletic awards at the activities banquet May 14.

The Centre chapter of the National Honor Society inducted nine new members: Justin Bina, Cassie Hill, Nellie Kassebaum, Shelby Makovec, Callie Riffel, Kailyn Riffel, Brenna Shields, Dakota Stimpson, and Brianna Svoboda.

Scholarships

More than $20,000 in scholarships was awarded. Recipients were:

Carrie Carlson — James Weber Memorial, Ronald J. Mille Memorial, Robert A. Kleinschmidt Memorial, Leo Jirak Memorial, Ford Tough, Orschelns, Kansas State University (4); American Red Cross (2); Loren E. and Clara Mowrer Memorial; Centre FFA Alumni; Centre FFA Leadership.

Tom Oborny — James Weber Memorial, Marion County Farm Bureau, Ronald J. Mille Memorial, Michael and Elizabeth Evancho Memorial, Loren E. and Clara Mowrer Memorial, Centre FFA Leadership, Centre FFA Alumni; Hutchinson Community College Presidential; American Red Cross; Tampa State Bank, Theodore R. Witt; Catholic Workman.

Justin Deines — Bud Peterson Memorial, Tampa State Bank, Centre FFA Leadership, Centre FFA Alumni, Kansas State University (4), American Red Cross, Fastline Publications.

Anna Weber — Centre Perk, Bethany College (2), American Red Cross.

Beka Basore — Centre Perk, McPherson College (5).

JayCe Johnson — Centre Perk, Lavern Allen Nursing.

Houston Svoboda — Tampa State Bank, American Red Cross.

Kevin Lewis (trip to Washington, D.C.) — Tri-County Telephone.

Sports awards

Citizenship awards, sponsored by the Kansas State High School Activities Association, went to Carlson, volleyball; Basore, girls’ basketball; Ty Simons, boys’ basketball; Basore and Deines, track; Kodey Johnson, golf; and Kaylenn Miller, cheerleader.

The 15 senior athletes received sports plaques.

Tim Vinduska, a junior, although not an athlete, received a certificate of appreciation from activities director Greg Wyatt for his outstanding contribution to Centre sports as manager for three teams and helping to organize tournaments.

He will be a student assistant coach for football this fall.
