Centre students stranded in D.C.

Staff writer

Everything went according to plan when 19 Centre students and their sponsors, Tim Vinduska and Karen Nickel, took a trip to the nation’s capital until they were ready to return home.

After visiting sites for four days, they boarded a plane for a flight to Kansas City the evening of July 29.

Just then, a strong thunderstorm hit the area. After three long hours on the plane, they were instructed to disembark.

The flight was canceled. Each student received $50 to buy essentials, and the group was bused to a hotel. Their luggage, however, had been taken to Atlanta.

“They went on a shopping spree at Target,” Vinduska said. “They were pretty happy about that.”

A new flight out was scheduled for Monday morning. The group took the extra time to visit the Smithsonian.

They arrived safely at Kansas City and were reunited with their luggage Aug. 1.

“We got so many compliments about how awesome and flexible our kids were,” Vinduska said. “They are the best.”
