Centre teams lose homecoming games

Staff writer

Homecoming night didn’t turn out well for Centre basketball teams. The girls were defeated, 51-40, and the boys were defeated, 67-52, both by Wakefield.

The Lady Cougars led for most of the first half and were tied with Wakefield after three quarters of play, but a bad fourth quarter led to their defeat.

A fourth quarter filled with errors, turnovers, and missed treys led to a 21-11 scoring advantage for the Lady Bombers.

Kate Basore was the star of Centre’s offense, scoring the first 4 points and adding four more baskets in the first half. She finished the game with 16 points.

Seniors Ally Basore, Abigail Svoboda, and Whitney Gutsch played the last home game of their high school careers and combined for 18 points. Kristin Vinduska and Carissa Shields are the other seniors on the team.

Cold shooting in the first half put the Centre boys in a 25-13 hole out of which they could not climb against a ranked 2A team. They were defeated, 67-52.

Despite 3-pointers by Cole Srajer and Dylan Deines in the third quarter, the Cougars turned over the ball numerous times and trailed by 11 points.

Srajer scored 13 points in the fourth quarter including two 3-pointers. Deines also had a trey, and Cole Methvin made a basket, but Centre was outscored 22-18 for a 15-point loss.

Both teams have records of 4-13. They will play Chase County on the road Friday.
