Staff writer

Centre split season-opening basketball games Friday at home.

Boys

Centre boys defeated Wakefield, 62-22, in their first game of the season Friday. Scoring was spread among eight players.

Playing against a team with a short roster, the Cougars outpaced the Bombers to score again and again. Mikey Silhan, a 5-6 senior, led scoring with 21 points, including three of nine shooting from the three-point line. Senior Luke Hudson got into foul trouble early but scored 9 points and had eight rebounds and six steals.

Sophomores Nick Krch and Santiago Knepp scored nine points each. Gentri Holub came off the bench to score five points. Other scorers were Quinten Bina, four; Tanner Stuchlik, three; and Kaigan Brewer, two.

The team shot 46.2% from the field.

Centre is playing in a preseason tournament in Herington this week.

Girls

With a new coach and several new, young players, the girls’ team got off to a rocky start. Facing an aggressive, strong Wakefield team, they trailed 27-12 at halftime and finished at 47-26.

Senior Carlye Deines led scoring with 11 points. Freshman Kaitlynn Bina scored five points, followed by freshman Olivia Carlson with four, Alex Remmers, three; Allie Stuchlik, two; and Lexis Brewer, one.
