Centre to pursue joint baseball with Herington

Staff writer

Centre and Herington schools may form a joint baseball team.

Neither school has a program now. There weren’t enough players at Centre to form a team last year.

Nine athletes signed up to play if a team could be formed.

Superintendent Larry Geist told school board members Monday that 178 students had enrolled for the 2024-2025 school year.

New classrooms built to expand the west wing of the district’s school are ready for occupancy.

Teachers are moving into them this week.

The remainder of the building project is expected to be finished by the end of December.

The board approved a budget for publication in the Marion County Record. A public hearing will be conducted before the board’s Sept. 9 meeting.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved giving an old set of outdoor bleachers to Burdick for the town’s annual fall rodeo.
  • Accepted nonresident students Carson Cox, Ensley Hett, and Astrid Strotkamp.
  • Accepted Brittany Hett’s resignation as day-care teacher. She will be replaced by Kindleigh Clark.
  • Extended contracts for Maranda McMichael, Amy Carlson, and Hillary Kickhaefer.
  • Approved a new handbook for bus drivers.
  • Appointed board members Nathan Brunner and Michelle Hajek as delegates to the annual Kansas Association of School Boards convention.
