Centre track captures pair of top finishes

Centre captured two gold medals Thursday at Herington, thanks in part to the efforts of Jensen Riffel and Cailey Barney.

Riffel and Barney put forth strong performances, each placing in all four of their events. Riffel took first in boys javelin, while Barney won the girls long jump.

The Cougars added two second-place medals from Xavier Espinoza, in the boys long jump and 100 meters, and Barney joined with her teammates to capture second in the girls 4 x 100 meter relay.

The boys were fifth out of 10 teams with 45 points overall, and the girls took eighth of 10 teams with 27 total points.

Boys top finishers: long jump, Xavier Espinoza second place, 19’ 2”; shot put, Jensen Riffel fourth place, 42’ 3”; discus, Riffel fifth place, 123’ 1”; javelin, Riffel first place, 133’ 5”; 100 meters, Espinoza first place, 11.41 seconds, Riffel fifth place, 53.81 seconds; 400 meters, Espinoza second place, 53.81 seconds; 3200 meters, Tanner Stuchlik sixth place, 12:39.32

Girls top finishers: 4 x 100 meter, second place, 54.62 seconds; long jump, Cailey Barney first place, 15’ 5½”, Carly Deines fifth place, 14’ 2”, Samantha Espinoza sixth place, 14’ ¼”; 100, Barney meters fourth place, 13.93 seconds; 200 meters, Barney fifth place, 29.01 seconds
