The Centre High School volleyball team advanced out of pool play Saturday at its own tournament with a record of 2-1.

They defeated Hope and Tescott in two games each, but were defeated by Berean Academy, also in two games.

They put up a fight against Herington in the semi-finals. Good blocking up front gave them an 8-2 lead in the first game, but the Railers gradually crept up and went ahead to win the game, 25-18.

The Lady Cougars led all the way in the second game and won, 25-21. It looked as though they might win the third game when they established a 19-12 lead, but once again, Herington gained on them to tie the game at 21. The teams tied again at 22 before the Railers went ahead to win, 25-22, and win the match.

Centre played Marion for third place and lost in two games. The first game was close for a while. The two teams tied at 18 before the Lady Warriors surged ahead for the win. In the second game, the Lady Cougars built up a 12-6 lead then seemed to fall apart. They allowed Marion to score 14 points without an answer. They lost, 25-15, to take fourth place in the tournament.

Coach Yvonne Burhoop was happy about the way the team played against Hope. She said they set the ball up very well. She said Herington changed the pace of the game and her team did not adjust to it.

“We had far too many unforced errors in the Herington and Marion matches,” she said.

Herington and Marion are 3A schools, and Burhoop still believes Centre will be at or near the top of the league.

Junior Cacey Simons was named to the all-tournament team.

Sept. 4

Centre split a home triangular Sept. 4. The Lady Cougars defeated Elyria, 25-20 and 25-19, and lost to Goessel, 25-22 and 25-13. Brenna Shields served for a total of 10 points against Elyria. Anna Weber led at the net with 15 of 18 spikes and four kills.

Shelby Makovec served for 9 points against Goessel, and Weber delivered 14 of 20 spikes and three kills. Ellie Miller, Simons, and Makenzie Deines had three blocks each.

Centre’s overall record stands at 3-6.

The Centre Junior High School volleyball team is 2-0 after defeating Tescott on Aug. 30 in two games, 25-14 and 25-11, and Wakefield on Sept. 6 in three games, 20-25, 25-22, and 15-10.
