Centre volleyball finishes season with loss

Staff writer

Centre volleyball ended for the season Tuesday when the team lost in two games to Elyria.

The team had defeated Burton in three games earlier in the contest but fell in the single elimination tournament.

In the Eisenhower League volleyball tournament Oct. 10 at Hope, Centre won the first three matches to advance out of pool play, but lost the semifinal and consolation matches to finish in fourth place.

The players were at the top of their game in the first three matches, serving and setting well and providing strong defense at the net. They defeated White City, Flint Hills Christian, and Solomon.

Wakefield defeated Centre in the semifinals, 21-25, and 18-25. In a rematch with Solomon in the consolation matchup, Solomon defeated Centre in three games, 25-13, 23-25, and 22-25.

Centre at White City

The Lady Cougars edged closer to the .500 mark Oct. 13 after defeating White City and Hope at the White City triangular.

The wins resulted in an overall record of 14-17 heading into the 1A regional tournament.

Good setting seemed to be the key to the dual victories.

In the match against White City, all three setters — Tori Marler, Theo Kassebaum, and Shelby Deines — did their jobs perfectly, setting a combined 32-of-32.

Centre won the match, 25-12 and 25-17.

Marler served for 16 points including one ace. Allison Shields led at the net, with 13-of-16 spike attempts and six kills.

The matchup with Hope was similar. Centre came out on top with scores of 25-19 and 25-16. Setters were 29-of-29. Carlye Simons served for 14 points including two aces.

Shields was good for 14-of-17 spike attempts and five kills. Simons completed 13-of-15 spikes and two kills. Anna Weber and Ellie Miller had a combination of seven blocks.

The Lady Cougars were seeded third in the regional tournament hosted Tuesday at Centre High School. Results were not yet available at press time.
