Centre wins 2 golds

Centre track finished with four top three medals despite having only eight athletes Thursday at the Council Grove Invitational.

Athletes Xavier Espinoza and Jensen Riffel had strong performances for the boys, with each taking first in one event and placing in a second. Those results earned them a seventh place finish overall out of 10 teams, with 28 points.

The girls took another step toward a state berth with a silver medal in the 4-by-100-meter relay. Spurred on by the relay, the girls tallied 18.5 total points, landing in seventh out of 10 teams.

Girls top finishers: 4-100-meter, second place, 55.6 seconds; long jump, Cailey Barney fifth place, 13-feet-8-inches, Samantha Espinoza T-sixth place, 13-feet-6-inches; triple jump, Alyssa Espinoza third place, 30-feet-8-inches; 400-meter, Barney fifth place, 1:14.8.

Boys top finishers: shot put, Riffel fifth place, 40-feet-1½-inches; javelin, Riffel first place, 145-feet-9-inches; long jump, Espinoza third place 19-feet-¾-inches; 100 meters, Espinoza first place, 11.2 seconds.
