Action in the new Wheat State League begins Friday. The Centre High School football team will open the season against Peabody-Burns at 7 p.m. at Cougar Field.
Coach Kelly Steiner said it has been a while since Centre has played Peabody-Burns in football. He expects the Warriors to field a good team and be competitive.
The seven seniors on Centre’s squad bring a lot of experience to the new season and will provide leadership, Steiner said.
In coming weeks, the Cougars will be playing league games with Little River, Hope, and White City. Other league members are Elyria Christian (no football team), Goessel, Wakefield, and Solomon.
Steiner hopes to develop a solid team by the time district games begin, including contests with Waverly, Altoona/Midway, and Hartford.
“That is when I want us to be playing our best football,” he said.
