Circus is coming to county

Staff writer

Culpepper and Merriweather Circus will be in Peabody on Sept. 9 with its big-top tent, animals, and midway attractions, as well as a trapeze artist, performing jungle cats, prancing ponies, and much more.

The circus will set up at Peabody City Park between 9:30 and 10 a.m. with shows at 5 and 7:30 p.m.

The community is invited to watch the mid-morning setup of the big top tent, preparation of rigging for entertainment at the show, and the unloading of circus animals.

Circus personnel also offer a free walking tour of the circus grounds. They offer a chance for families, school groups, and interested community members to meet and learn about their circus family. The tour offers information about performers, history of Culpepper and Merriweather Circus, and even the grooming and veterinary care of their animals.

In addition to two evening shows and the free walking tour, the Midway opens at 4 p.m. with pony rides, moon bounce, concessions, and more.

Organizers of the Peabody Safe Kids Camp, an annual event at Peabody-Burns Elementary School, are bringing the circus to town as a fundraiser.

Discount advance tickets to the Culpepper and Merriweather big top show are available at Peabody Market, Peabody State Bank, Mane Street Beautique, and Pop’s Diner. In Marion, they are available at Carlsons’ Grocery and Ampride, and at Ampride in Hillsboro.
