City clerk changes -- again

Marty Grill out,
Angela Lange back in

For nearly eight months, Marion City Council has been seeking, hiring, or firing a city clerk.

At Monday’s meeting, the council hired former city clerk Angela Lange following the termination of city clerk Marty Grill.

Lange resigned her post May 14.

On May 10, Alan Meisinger was hired as city clerk. He was terminated by the council Aug. 23. Grill was hired Nov. 1.

The council met in executive session at the Dec. 28 council meeting to discuss personnel. Following that meeting, Kjellin said he told Grill he and the council were concerned about Grill’s performance. Grill indicated the council would need to fire him.

Earlier in Monday’s meeting, city administrator Doug Kjellin told the council that Grill was not “working out.” Mayor Mary Olson then asked the council for a 10-minute executive session with City Attorney Dan Baldwin to discuss the situation but her motion died for a lack of a second. Councilman Bill Holdeman then made a motion to terminate Grill, effective Monday. The motion passed.

After a 30-minute executive session with Kjellin and Lange, the council unanimously approved the hiring of Lange and appointed her city clerk effective Monday.

Lange as reinstated at the same salary as when she resigned — $44,000 per year.
