Class reunions compete to collect most donated food and money

Marion High School alumni returning for Old Settlers’ Day reunions have been tossed a challenge this year: Which class can raise the most donated food and money for Marion County Food Bank and Resource Center?

At stake are bragging rights and the chance to claim the first-ever prize in what Resource Center volunteer Jackie Volbrecht hopes will be a recurring event. As to what that prize might be, Volbrecht wasn’t quite sure.

“It might be something like a golden can,” she said.

Volbrecht contacted reunion coordinators for each class to recruit support from their classmates, Volbrecht said. Donations of food and checks will be received between 4 and 5 p.m. Friday at the center.

Gerry Henderson will announce the winners during class introductions Saturday in Central Park.

An open house at the Resource Center will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, and the public is invited to tour the facility and make donations as well, Volbrecht said.
