The series of Conscious Discipline classes will continue from 6 to 8 p.m. for four consecutive Tuesdays in April, beginning Tuesday at Marion Elementary School.
According to Linda Ogden, director of Communities in Schools of Marion County, new parents, seasoned classroom teachers, or anyone who interacts with toddlers and elementary school-aged children will appreciate the information provided.
“More and more homes, churches, preschools, childcare sites, and classrooms are implementing this effective way of guiding children to be socially and emotionally healthy,” Ogden said.
Social and emotional development of children provides a foundation for academic learning and reduces meltdowns and tantrums.
Conscious Discipline is the work of Dr. Becky Bailey, a former classroom teacher who now is a child psychologist in Florida. The program helps adults return to the basics of being consciously aware of their own behaviors and response in order to strengthen relationships with and cooperation from children.
Cheri Ochs Wheeler, a licensed specialist clinical social worker (LSCSW) and a Conscious Discipline trainer, and Natalie Hett, a community case manager, will lead local classes.
The series is free with childcare provided for children up to age 12 provided. Refreshments will be served.
Participants who attend the four classes will receive a $10 gift certificate (per household) to a local grocery store.
