College increases classes, enrollment at Marion location

Butler Community College’s Marion location had a 10 percent enrollment increase from fall 2010 to fall 2011, and the college is increasing the classes it offers in Marion, Butler of the Flint Hills Director Amy Kjellin said Friday.

In particular, the college is expanding availability of early childhood development classes, such as child psychology, she said. Another recent addition is a computer class about Microsoft’s Office 2010 programs.

Those classes are in addition to the expected general education credits offered, such as English composition and public speaking, and personal enrichment classes, such as art and creative writing.

“Butler has been here for a long time, but I don’t think people realize what we offer,” Kjellin said.

She said the enrollment increase is a good sign, because the college increasingly has competition from online college courses.

The college also works closely with high schools to provide classes for concurrent credit. Marion High School has 14 credit hours of concurrent credit available. Peabody-Burns, Centre, and Hillsboro high schools each have six or more hours of concurrent credit available.
